Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the Diamond Jubilee Celebrations on April 3, 2023, in New Delhi. “CBI has emerged as a ‘brand’ for justice,” said PM Modi while addressing the event. Corruption disrupts the opportunities of youth and demeans talent, supporting only the privileged. It hampers the capability of the nation, which impacts its progress. “Unfortunately, India has seen a legacy of corruption for decades,” the Prime Minister said. He further said that the country has been a witness to outrage against corruption, policy paralysis, and poor investments for decades, which has harmed India’s progress. But things have changed since 2014.
Quality investigation through use of tech & innovation
“The use of technology and innovation will improve the quality of investigation” said PM Modi while elaborating on the ways in which the investigation process can be advanced in India. He also suggested that we collaborate with tech-enabled entrepreneurs and youngsters for this cause.
President’s Police Medal for Distinguished Service
During the programme, an Investiture Ceremony for recipients of the President’s Police Medal for Distinguished Service and Gold Medal for Best Investigating Officers of the CBI was held, wherein the Prime Minister conferred medals to the awardees.
Extension of CBI office & launch of its Twitter account
Prime Minister Modi also inaugurated the newly constructed office complexes of the CBI at Shillong, Pune, and Nagpur. He released a Postage Stamp and Commemorative Coin marking the Diamond Jubilee Celebration year of the CBI. He also launched the Twitter handle of CBI @CBIHeadquarters.
CBI
The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) was established by a resolution of the Ministry of Home Affairs, Government of India, dated April 1, 1963. The CBI is not a statutory body but derives its power to investigate from the Delhi Special Police Establishment Act, 1946.
In 1963, the CBI was established by the Government of India with a view to investigate serious crimes related to the defence of India, corruption in high places, serious fraud, cheating, and embezzlement and social crime, particularly hoarding, black marketing, and profiteering in essential commodities, having all-India and inter-state ramifications.
Notably, it is also the nodal police agency in India that coordinates investigations on behalf of Interpol member countries. According to the Central Vigilance Commission (CVC) annual report, its conviction rate is as high as 65 to 70%, which is comparable to the best investigation agencies in the world.
