The election bugle has been sounded in Karnataka with voting for the 224-member legislative assembly scheduled for May 10. Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Rajiv Kumar announced it on Wednesday, March 29, 2023. The Election Commission also announced the schedule for the by-elections to the Jalandhar Lok Sabha seat, three assembly seats in two states, and the postponed election to the Sohiong seat in Meghalaya. Voting on all these seats will be held on May 10, and results will be out on May 13.
The Karnataka election results will be announced on May 13. The 224-member Karnataka Assembly’s term will conclude on May 24. According to the HS, the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Congress Party are the main contenders. The Janata Dal-Secular can be a serious contender in multiple seats and emerge as a king-maker in the event of a hung assembly, as it has done on several times in the past.
The Congress and JDS have both released their initial lists of applicants for 124 and 93 seats, respectively. The ruling BJP, headed by Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai, currently has 119 MLAs, while the Congress has 75 and its ally JDS has 28.
The Jalandhar Lok Sabha seat is vacant due to the death of sitting Congress MP Santokh Singh Chaudhary in January. Chaudhary Santokh Singh, a Member of Parliament from Jalandhar Lok Sabha, died of cardiac arrest on January 14 during Rahul Gandhi’s Bharat Jodo Yatra. Odisha’s Jharsuguda MLA and State Health Minister Naba Kishore Das were murdered.
Rahul Prakash Kol, MLA from the Chanbe seat in Mirzapur in Uttar Pradesh, died due to illness. The Swar assembly seat in Rampur district fell vacant after SP MLA Abdullah Azam’s term was cancelled. Elections were postponed due to the death of UDP candidate HDR Lyngdoh in Sohyeong during the recently concluded assembly elections in Meghalaya.
Notification for these seats will be issued on April 13. Nominations can be made until April 20, scrutiny of nomination papers will be done on April 21, the date of withdrawal of nominations is April 24, and voting will be held on May 10.
