Jammu and Kashmir administration is making "advance arrangements to host one of the G20 events in May this year, a senior official said here, reported Hindusthan Samachar. "As part of India holding the presidency of the G20, several events are going to be held in mid-May, but dates have not been fixed yet, divisional commissioner Kashmir Pandurang Kundbarao Pole said. However, he said Srinagar is likely to host one of the G20 events for which we are preparing in advance.
Pole said the administration was sprucing up the city for the major event as it will go a long way in boosting tourism in Kashmir, while at the same time such an event will also clear the misgivings about the situation in the valley.
Normally, no development works are undertaken during the winter months in Kashmir due to freezing temperatures, but the government has made an exception this year due to the likelihood of Srinagar hosting a G20 event. Men and machinery have been put to work to remove the dust and mud that accumulates by the roadside during the winter and is usually removed in late April every year.
Just a couple of weeks earlier, Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha had said that G-20 Presidency is an opportunity for the state to showcase its cultural richness and tourism potential to the world, and had also called upon the youth and women entrepreneurs to come together for the purpose. He also termed India’s Presidency of G-20 as an opportunity to showcase the potential of Ek Bharat Shreshtha Bharat.
Sinha had appealed to the youth clubs, women entrepreneurs, tourism entrepreneurs and innovators to come together to showcase vibrant and progressive Jammu and Kashmir during India’s G-20 Presidency by also offering suggestions and ideas for the G-20 events to be conducted in the union territory.
The G20 countries include Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, Germany, France, India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, South Korea, Turkey, the United States and the United Kingdom.
