Australia will be hosting the Quad Leaders’ Summit for 2023 on May 24 in Sydney, Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese announced on Wednesday. The meeting at the Sydney Opera House will be Australia's first time hosting the Quad Leaders' Summit. PM Albanese will welcome the Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi, the Prime Minister of Japan, Kishida Fumio, and the President of the United States, Joseph Biden to Sydney at the Summit.
"The hosting of this Quad Leaders’ meeting there at the Sydney Opera House, will be a chance for us to work cooperatively with the United States, Japan, and India," PM Albanese said in his Twitter video post.
According to the Australian Government's press release, the 2023 Sydney Quad Leaders’ Summit will be showcasing the QUAD’s enduring contribution to the region and the tangible benefits that it is delivering for Indo-Pacific partners. "We will be discussing the global economic environment that we know is under pressure due to global inflationary pressures," PM Albanese told reporters.
“The Quad is committed to supporting an open, stable, and prosperous Indo-Pacific that is respectful of sovereignty and ensures security and growth for all. I look forward to discussing with Quad Leaders how we alongside important regional institutions, such as ASEAN, the Pacific Islands Forum, the Indian Ocean Rim Association, and our regional partners can shape the Indo-Pacific region we all want to live in,” Australian PM Albanese said.
Participation of Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the Quad leadership summit was announced earlier during the joint press conference with his Australian counterpart in March when the latter was on a four-day visit to India. “India and Australia are both members of the Quad. I thank PM Albanese for inviting me to Australia for the Quad Leaders’ Summit in May. I have invited him to India for the G20 summit in September,” PM Modi had said.
India, Australia, Japan, and the United States share a vision of an Indo-Pacific that is open, stable, and prosperous, regulated by established laws and norms, and in which all may collaborate, trade, and thrive. Talking about the upcoming Summit, PM Albanese said, "Quad partners are deeply invested in the success of the Indo-Pacific. We are always better off when we act together with our close friends and partners.”
Every year, the four Quad Leaders meet to discuss the region’s most pressing challenges and advance the Quad’s positive and practical agenda. Quad partners are working together to address common regional concerns such as improving regional health security, promoting key and emerging technologies, strengthening connectivity, enhancing clean energy innovation, and increasing supply chain resilience. The Quad complements other bilateral, regional, and multilateral cooperation in the Indo-Pacific, including with ASEAN and Pacific partners.
