Mulayam Singh, Sudha Murty among 106 Padma Award recipients

Prestigious Padma Awards for 2023, have been announced by the Government of India. Prime Minister, Narendra Modi has congratulated all those who have been conferred the Padma Award. In a tweet, PM Modi said, ‘Congratulations to those who have been conferred the Padma Awards. India cherishes their rich and varied contributions to the nation and their efforts to enhance our growth trajectory.’

Padma Awards, the country’s highest civilian Awards, are conferred in three categories- Padma Vibhushan, Padma Bhushan and Padma Shri. The Awards are given in various disciplines or fields of activities like art, social work, public affairs, science and engineering, trade and industry, medicine, literature and education, sports, civil service etc.

‘Padma Vibhushan’ is awarded for exceptional and distinguished service. ‘Padma Bhushan’ is given for distinguished service of high order and ‘Padma Shri’ is awarded for distinguished service in any field. The awards are announced on the occasion of Republic Day every year.

These awards are conferred by the President of India at ceremonial functions which are held at Rashtrapati Bhawan usually around March and April every year. For the year 2023, the President has approved the conferment of 106 Padma Awards including 3 duo cases (in a duo case, the award is counted as one). The list comprises 6 Padma Vibhushan, 9 Padma Bhushan and 91 Padma Shri Awards. 19 of the awardees are women and the list also includes 2 persons from the category of Foreigners/NRI/PIO/OCI and 7 Posthumous awardees.

Those who have been awarded Padma Vibhushan are – Balkrishna Doshi (Posthumous) in architecture. He is from Gujarat. Zakir Hussain has been given the same award in art. Similarly, S M Krishna has been awarded in public affairs, Dilip Mahalanabis (Posthumous) in medicine, Srinivas Varadhan in science & engineering and  Mulayam Singh Yadav (Posthumous) in public affairs.

Padma Bhushan has been awarded to S L Bhyrappa in literature & education, Kumar Mangalam Birla in trade & industry, Deepak Dhar in science & engineering, Vani Jairam in art, Swami Chinna Jeeyar in spiritualism, Suman Kalyanpur in art, Kapil Kapoor in literature & education, Sudha Murty in social work, Kamlesh D Patel in Spiritualism. The Padma Shri award has been given to 91 distinguished people from different areas.
