In a significant development towards sustainable energy, the Indian government has approved the installation of ten nuclear reactors in the country. The Union Minister of State, Dr. Jitendra Singh, announced this decision in a statement laid on the floor of the Lok Sabha.

PSUs and Specialized Government Agencies to Take Up the Task

The government has roped in public sector units (PSUs) to take up the installation of the nuclear reactors or specialized government agencies exclusively. The government has also given administrative approval and financial sanction for ten indigenous Pressurized Heavy Water Reactors of 700 MW each in fleet mode.

The Location of the Nuclear Reactors

The nuclear reactors will be installed in four different states, namely, Karnataka, Haryana, Madhya Pradesh, and Rajasthan. Kaiga, Gorakhpur, Chutka, and Mahi Banswara are the respective locations for the installation of the nuclear reactors. Mahi Banswara will have four reactors, while the other three locations will have two each.

Amendment in the Atomic Energy Act in 2015

The Indian government amended the Atomic Energy Act in 2015 to enable the joint ventures of the Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited (NPCIL) with PSUs to set up nuclear power projects.

A Step towards Clean Energy

The installation of the nuclear reactors is a significant step towards achieving clean energy in the country. It will also help the government meet its target of generating 40% of the country’s energy from non-fossil fuel sources by 2030.

The Cost and Timeline

The installation of the nuclear reactors will be carried out progressively by the year 2031 at a cost of Rs. 1,05,000 crores. The reactors will be set up in fleet mode, which means that they will be installed one after another in a sequential manner.

The Indian government’s decision to set up ten nuclear reactors is a significant step towards achieving the country’s energy goals. The move towards clean energy will also help the country reduce its dependence on fossil fuels and achieve its target of reducing carbon emissions. The government’s decision to involve PSUs and specialized government agencies will also create job opportunities and boost the country’s economy.
