India is all set to take over the chair of the Global Partnership on Artificial Intelligence (GPAI) after assuming the G20 Presidency. The takeover of the chair will take place today (November 21) in Tokyo.

Minister of State for Electronics & Information Technology, Rajeev Chandrasekhar will attend and address the GPAI meeting which is being held in Tokyo.

“The Minister of State for Electronics & Information Technology and Skill Development & Entrepreneurship, Rajeev Chandrasekhar will represent India at the GPAI meeting to be held in Tokyo on November 21, 2022, for the symbolic takeover from France, which is the outgoing Council Chair,” read an official statement by Ministry of Electronics & IT.

During the election for Council Chair of GPAI, India had received more than a two-thirds majority of first-preference votes. Canada and the United States of America were elected to the two additional government seats on the Steering Committee as the two countries stood next best in the tally after India.

“For the 2022-2023 Steering Committee, the five government seats will therefore be held by Japan (as Lead Council Chair and Co-Chair of the Steering Committee), France (Outgoing Council Chair), India (Incoming Council Chair), Canada and the United States,” Ministry’s statement further added.

But what is GPAI?

Global Partnership on AI (GPAI) is a first-of-its-kind multi-stakeholder initiative aimed at developing a better understanding of the challenges and opportunities associated with Artificial Intelligence (AI).  Through advanced research and applied activities on AI-related concerns, the forum will strive to bridge the gap between theory and practice using the experience and diversity of member countries.

The GPAI is constituted of 25 member nations. India had joined the partnership in 2020, as a founding member. The other members include the US, the UK, EU, Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Mexico, New Zealand, the Republic of Korea, and Singapore.

The multi-stakeholder initiative collaborates with partners and international organisations, top industry experts, civil society leaders, government officials, and academics to promote the responsible evolution of AI. It also directs the responsible development and application of AI, which is based on human rights, inclusion, diversity, innovation, and economic growth.

AI for Digital Economy?

Artificial Intelligence (AI), in a short span of time, has emerged as an important topic for global development. According to a 2018 report by the McKinsey Global Institute, AI has the potential to generate an additional $13 trillion in global economic activity by 2030, or a 16 per cent increase in cumulative GDP. This equates to an additional 1.2 per cent GDP growth per year.

For India, AI is a key enabler for the growth of the technology sector and a force multiplier for the country’s goal of achieving a $1 Trillion Digital Economy by 2025. AI is expected to add USD $967 Bn to the Indian economy by 2035 and USD 450–500 billion to India’s GDP by 2025, accounting for 10% of the USD 5 trillion GDP target.

India’s election as GPAI’s Council Chair demonstrates that the world views India as a trusted technology partner that has always advocated for the ethical use of technology to improve citizens’ lives.
