Newly appointed Education Minister of Bihar, Mewalal Chaudhary on Thursday resigned from his post as he was facing corruption charges. On the advice of Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, Bihar Governor Fagu Chauhan has accepted the resignation of Mewalal Chaudhary and handed over the additional charge of education department to Ashok Chaudhary.
On Monday, with the formation of the new government, Chief Minister Nitish Kumar made, JDU MLA from Tarapur, Mewalal Chaudhary a minister in his cabinet and gave the responsibility of the Education Department. The opposition strongly criticized Chief Minister Nitish Kumar for this appointment. According to opposition leaders the Chief Minister has made the same person the Minister of Education Department, who is under investigation for the irregularities in appointment in the same Department. Leaders of BJP and JDU also had to say that corruption will not be tolerated in the new government.
Seeing that his government is being troubled by the corruption charges, Chief Minister Nitish Kumar called Mewalal Chaudhary at his residence on Wednesday. On Thursday, Mewalal Chaudhary first took charge of the Ministry of Education and then resigned his post shortly thereafter.
In 2017, a criminal case was registered against Mewalal Chaudhary for the irregularities in the appointment of Assistant Professor and Junior Scientist while being Vice Chancellor of Bhagalpur Agricultural University. In 2017 the current President of India and then Governor of Bihar, Ramnath Kovind, who was also the Chancellor of Bhagalpur Agricultural University, freed Mewalal Chaudhary from the post of Vice Chancellor.
The Vigilance Department of the Government of Bihar is investigating the matter.
In 2017, JDU suspended Mewalal Chaudhary from the party after then opposition party Bharatiya Janata Party took up the matter loudly. But in the 2020 assembly elections Nitish Kumar not only gave party ticket to Mewalal Chaudhary from Tarapur but also made him a minister on Monday. But after being troubled with corruption charges on Mewalal Chaudhary, he took his resignation within three days.
