The country's largest city forest is being developed in the Uttar Pradesh temple city of Vrindavan. Saubhari Nagar Van is being developed by the state forest department on 130 hectares of land near Sunrakh village in Vrindavan. Mathura District Administration of the state, Brij Teerth Vikas Parishad, Mathura-Vrindavan Development Authority, and the Forest Department are all working together on this ambitious state government project.
In two phases, the Forest Department is transforming the city forest by planting around 76,000 trees. The Forest Department planted 76,875 trees in the first phase on an area of 123 hectares. In this forest, over 25 different varieties of Braj mythical trees have been planted.
Brijesh Singh Parmar, regional forest officer, stated that this city forest will soon have a park to attract pilgrims and visitors. This park will have a jogging track, a swing and other children's amenities. This initiative will result in the advancement of eco-restoration, while simultaneously resolving the monkey problem. According to an official, plans will be formed in the future to retain monkeys in this forest.
The project site selected for Saubhari City Forest, has Kosi drain on one side and Yamuna river on the other side. This middle place is the Kaliyadah Daman Leela of Lord Krishna and the Taposthali of Saubhari Rishi. For this reason, the selected area is also very important in mythological, religious and historical form. Even today, there is an ashram of Saubhari Rishi in Sunrakh.
There is also a description about Saubhari Rishi in the sixth chapter of the ninth canto of Vishnu Purana, Devi Bhagavata Purana and Shrimad Bhagavata Purana. This project will lead to the development of eco-restoration, local environmental site. At the same time, the problem of monkeys will also be solved. This Saubhari city forest to be developed in Mathura-Vrindavan will be the largest city forest in the country.
